The Navy Suit: Why One Well-Cut Suit Beats a Closet Full of Cheap Ones

Sure, you have several pieces of fast fashion or perhaps that single item which you wore at your first job interview when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth. Indeed, you cannot advance your career with those outfits. The best thing which you could buy for yourself in this case is navy suit.

It sounds ridiculous, of course. Sure, you would like to find something brighter, something which can be varied. This is how people think, and this is the mistake.

Indeed, inexpensive suit looks new only for about six months and then begins aging. It pills; shoulders lose their form; lining becomes translucent, exposing the fact that it is made of artificial materials. Moreover, the message delivered by such an outfit is that you are still playing dress-ups in your dad’s clothes.

Good suit from such brands as SuitSupply and J.Crew’s Ludlow collection line is completely another story. Its fabric hangs right; its construction stands up to hundreds of meetings, dinners and stressful commuting.

To begin with, navy is the most versatile color. It is formal enough to participate in a funeral or a boardroom discussion and can be casual when matched with T-shirt and good shoes. Secondly, one can easily wear navy suit at least three days a week without looking like a fool. Trying to repeat this experiment with charcoal pinstripe suit – you will look like a caricatured bankster.

Last but not least, fit is a key factor in selection of an appropriate suit. The ready-to-wear suit is created with some imaginary average person in mind, which actually doesn’t exist. Tailor solves all your problems – for fifty or a hundred bucks you will get perfectly adjusted sleeves, waist suppression, right trouser hem.

Think about the suit as your uniform which eliminates the choice dilemma in the morning. When you put it on, you immediately take proper posture and feel more confident. People will give you additional respect automatically just because of your appearance, and not of your words.

Professional wardrobe must consist of few, but very good items of clothing. Navy suit is much better than dozens of cheap polyester things.

So, dispose three suits making you look like a salesman at used car dealership. Spend the money on single garment which will be beneficial in the long term. Your future self, conducting business discussions and having meetings, will thank you for this decision.
