One can find an interesting contradiction in the development of the technology of shaving in the last decades. While spending a tremendous amount of money on disposable razors that will eventually turn into garbage and will create a pile of extremely expensive trash, your grandfather was spending a couple of pennies to enjoy the process rather than suffer from the chore. We sacrificed the simplicity to our false feeling of comfort.
Multi-blade cartridge razor appeared very recently. The safety razor by King Camp Gillette dating back to 1903 gives close and safe shave and that is why it has not changed that much as it does its job perfectly and is one of the brightest examples of engineering simplicity. It uses only one blade which slices the hair cleanly without pulling on the skin.
It looks reasonable to think whether the forty blades would work better when the multi-blade propaganda managed to convince everybody that there is any advantage in three or five vibrating cartridges. But it is not the case since such blades cause painful ingrown hair and irritation that is far from being comfortable for your face. Single sharp edge requires less pressure and provides better shaving.
Price is the only advantage of disposable razors but buying a pack with one hundred Derby Extra or Astra blades for eight dollars will be enough for you to shave for a year. While spending more money on Gillette Fusion cartridges that will not provide you with comfortable shaving for several weeks, basic math will help you to save money every time you go to Target.
Learning curve does exist and you should not think that you will manage to do everything perfectly in your first try. You will need some time to get used to holding the razor and adjusting the angle while letting the steel do the job. It will take you no more than a week to become perfect at it. Moreover, results will come immediately.
Using a safety razor requires you to twist the Merkur 34C or vintage Gillette Super Speed. It also means loading a new blade manually without having to rip off plastic packaging. This minor change in your morning ritual will make you stop for a second and become human again. Your grandfather would be disappointed to see how you treat your face.
