Cologne That Becomes Your Signature, Not Your Trend

We have tons of unfinished fragrances. From “Blue de Chanel” era to “Sauvage” mania and that one bottle of “Acqua di Gio” which your uncle bought you back when you were a freshman. It is time we stopped trying to catch up with all the trends and built our reputation instead.

Signature perfume is not about the trend. It is about your smell. When you walk into any meeting or the dive-bar, there should be something distinct about it.

Take “Le Labo Santal 33” for example. It is everywhere now, and yet, it got its notes right. There is something about the smell of leather and smoke. It is textured. It should be a textured perfume, not some “fresh” stuff.

The problem with “designer blue” perfumes is that they try to please everyone at once. It is the sonic wallpaper. It smells well. But “well” is definitely not what would get you noticed. “Well” would not make anybody approach you on your first date.

Go niche. Think of “Byredo”, “Diptyque” or “Imaginary Authors” perfume houses. They never take risks. They smell of tomato leaves, whiskey or cold rain on the hot asphalt. The perfumes they make tell a story. You need to smell like a story, not like a chemical factory.

Think “Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille”. It is heavy. It is spicy. Probably not the best option for light-minded girly girls. Nonetheless, when worn confidently, it becomes your protector. People would notice you and say, “I smelled tobacco and thought of you”.

This is exactly what you are supposed to hear.

Do not buy whatever you see in the stores. Go to the perfume store like Nordstrom or local one. Spray the scent on the left wrist and the other one on the right. Wander around the store for an hour. Have lunch. Observe how the perfume interacts with your body chemistry. It changes the scent and creates a co-production of the two.

When you find yours, stick to it. Wear the fragrance every single day. Make it absorb into your leather jacket and linger in your office chair. It should become an inseparable part of your personal brand along with your handwriting and coffee order.

Do not chase the “compliment getters”. All the lists are fake. Chase the scent itself. Chase the scent which makes you feel like a protagonist.
