Hosting Houseguests With Genuine Grace

At last, your place is prepared for visitors. You managed to buy those last towels and luxurious hand soap with that fancy scent of spa. Hosting people is quite similar to having a job performance review and being a whole department at the same time. It is quite stressful indeed.

The key to handling your expectations prior to your guests even knocking the door lies in telling them the password of Wi-Fi and informing them about what kind of shower you have right away. Do not lie about your couch in the studio apartment if you have one. People will appreciate the honesty more than the number of threads your towels have.

Do not stuff your fridge with beer and ketchup. They will be quite happy to find there some fruits and sparkling water. Offer them a clean towel and a charger for their phones. Anticipation of your guests’ needs will prove you are a responsible adult.

It is okay to let them know you will need an hour for checking your emails. There is no need to entertain them all the time. Boredom means they feel at home.

Making dinner plans can drive you crazy because of the soufflé you have decided to cook. Just order some Thai food or prepare simple pasta dish which cannot go wrong. No one likes watching how you get crazy because of your burnt garlic bread. Stay cool, and everything will be fine.

Morning routine is when everything goes wrong. Provide them with the coffee station so they do not have to come to your bedroom searching for some latte. Granola bars put on your kitchen counter give you at least half an hour of peace. This is worth it.

To sum up, they came there to spend time with you, not to observe your interior. Do not waste your time cleaning up dust bunnies under the bed. Just be there and listen to their stories.
