Now that we’re being honest, you’ve finally gotten an apartment with decent light and suddenly have the overwhelming desire to become a “plant parent”. This is how all of us feel most likely after noticing that the apartment looks sterile and needs some greenery in order to distract from all this IKEA furniture that gets rarely dusted.
However, what we usually do with our first plants is the same as with the high-maintenance significant others. We water them too much, constantly moving around and panicking when one of the leaves falls off. After two weeks we are left with dead brownness and wondering where we went wrong.
Here comes the secret: the key is to choose the right roommates.
First of all, you have to have a Pothos plant in your apartment. Here’s the thing: this plant is a cockroach in the houseplants’ family, and I mean it in the nicest possible way. This plant will thrive in the darkest corners of your tiny studio apartment without needing any extra care.
And if you want to prove that you’ve grown up, get yourself a Snake Plant. This plant with an architectural shape will give your apartment the touch of modernity, but will not need any extra efforts.
And lastly, in case you are the type of person who likes to baby the houseplants, get a Jade Plant. The leaves of this plant store water just like camels, and it does not require anything from you but sunlight and dried soil between the waterings.
In fact, the biggest mistake all these new plant buyers make is that they get the Boston Fern or the Calathea as soon as they start buying plants. The thing is that these little creatures require certain level of humidity that you won’t get from your HVAC. Start with tough ones and then proceed to tropical ones.
